October 16th, 2009

Hello everyone,

Well it has been quite a while since I have written anything here, and after a year or so of ups and downs, I am once again motivated and focused to write and share my ideas. I am now sitting here with a cold cup of coffee thinking about freelancing and looking up various topics to write about. As of late, my political brain has kicked in which is leading me to vent about the current situation with the health care plan, racism and thoughts on the media coverage of this presidency. I am trying to be objective in order to retain a non biased point of view, which is a task within itself. However, I find this to be the best way to review on what's going on.

One topic that has caught my attention concerns a question that was asked by Scott, a fourth grader to our president. The question was "Why do people hate you?" They are supposed to love you and God is love." President Obama smiled and replied with much enthusiasm "That's what I'm talking about!" Now, this may seem like a relevant question and to some degree it is, keeping in mind that a fourth grader asked it. However, I think that this young man was encouraged to ask this question. Please keep in mind that children seem to have been influenced by Mr. Obama to a high degree. This seems to be another example of our youth being thrust upon the political arena in order to sway the decisions and opinions of adults.

I know, this might sound radical and absurd, and maybe I am over thinking this. However, I don't think that I am far from the mark. We have seen our youth, who are inexperienced and in fact a empty vessel, being influenced by this presidency in great numbers....and to what end? Now, I realize that this is not at all new. Many past presidents and leaders have stirred up our youth into action, inspiring them to take action and ask questions. This in itself is very common. However lets look at this question. "Why do people hate you?" This is a relative question, after all there are some who hate not only his policies but they hate who he is as a human being. It is my opinion that harboring those feelings are destructive and not worth much attention. These people will find anything to "hate" in order to promote their radical ideas.

Now lets look at the next statement. "They are supposed to love you". This got my attention. Why are we suppose to love him? What has he done to earn our love for him? I am sincerely asking. Why would this young man assume that we are supposed to love him as if not doing so is unheard of.

Now in conjunction with this statement, young Scott states "And God is love". Hm mm. It seems that Scotts' train of thought might go like this. God is love so therefore we are supposed to love President Obama. In my opinion God is love. However, does that suggest that we must love a person regardless if that person proposes acts and policies that we disagree with? Must we blindly agree with ideas that go against our own? And why? Is it because President Obama is the first African American president? Is it because he has ascended in the political eye quickly? Is it because he is a exceptional public speaker? Is it because he is a relatively young president?

These are just some of the questions that I asked myself. Again, I am not looking at this through the eyes of a republican or democrat. I am simply looking at this through the eyes of a American.

Thanks for reading,

John
